Jon Heyman, NY Post Reporter has reported that ace Gerrit Cole has targeted a date of his return which is June 1. The reigning CY Young winner has already been shelved for 60-days due to right elbow inflammation earlier this spring.

The good news is that Cole had avoided the worst case scenario which was getting Tommy John Surgery, which would've ended his 2024 season. The Yankees have dodged a bullet. Getting Cole back as early as June is the best possible news the Yankees have received this early into the season.

Gerrit Cole was the Yankees best player of all last season. He is coming off a dominating 2023 in which he finished off with an 15-4 record along with a 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 33 starts. His ERA was the lowest in the AL and the second-lowest in the Majors, trailing former Padres' Blake Snell (2.25) who eventually took home the AL CY Young Award.

This pitching staff has already taken a blow into the season. Yesterday, Nestor Cortes was tagged for four earned in the 5-4 victory versus the Houston Astros. And that is not a good sign at all. That just shows how important Gerrit Cole is to the team. New York is not the same without their ace. The best thing the team can do without their ace is trying to find a way to survive. It won't be easy, that's for sure.

Cole's optimistic return date has the Yankees tied with the Orioles as favorites to win the AL East in 2024 at +180. The next closest team is the Toronto Blue Jays, at a distance +400.
