Former Yankees Top Prospect Begins Comeback After Tommy John Surgery
Last season New York Yankees fans got a glimpse of the prospect fittingly nicknamed the Martian as the team called up Jasson Dominguez, who had drawn comparisons to Mike Trout, Mickey Mantle, and Bo Jackson when he was signed.
The Martian dazzled through eight games, batting .258 with 4 home runs and a stolen base, but he was eventually ruled out for the season when it was revealed that he needed Tommy John Surgery.
The Yankees may have another talented outfielder on the way as Dominguez officially starts his rehab assignment. The team sent Jasson Dominguez to the Tampa Tarpons, the team's Single-A affiliate, to begin getting at-bats.
While A-ball is a long way from the majors, the assignment makes a lot of sense as Dominguez will be at the team's Spring Training facility where they have the resources to help in his recovery. Aaron Boone revealed that Dominguez will serve as a designated hitter for the first two weeks of his rehab assignment, which should give him more time to get up to speed while allowing his UCL rest from throwing.
It'll be interesting to see what the Yankees do once Dominguez is fully recovered, as the team is seemingly set in the outfield. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and Alex Verdugo need constant at-bats while Giancarlo Stanton will continue to occupy the designated hitter role.
Where do the New York Yankees go from here
The return of Jasson Dominguez brings on an interesting yet good problem for the team as they return another great hitter in a crowded outfield. The team has an outfielder on the bench in Trent Grisham who's played sparingly, but his role will become more important in the playoffs as a defensive replacement or pinch runner. The team also has top prospect Spencer Jones in the minor leagues who plays outfield and may become a trade piece if Soto is re-signed. The outfield will be a position to watch as the Yankees have plenty of prospects to move and veterans that need playing time.
