Late on Wednesday night, the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys made a rare inside-the-division trade. The New York Giants sent Defensive Tackle Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys along with a 2026 7th-round pick in exchange for the Cowboys' 2026 6th-round pick.

The Giants signed Jordan Phillips this off-season on a one-year deal worth $1.21 million dollars. The Giants hoped that Phillips would be a player they could plug and play alongside Dexter Lawrence but, he hasn't had the best training camp. The Giants in all likelihood were going to end up cutting Phillips so getting any asset in exchange for him is a massive win for Joe Schoen.

The Giants made this trade in part due to the emergence of Elijah Chatman throughout this offseason. Chatman got a tryout with the Giants during Rookie Minicamp where he earned a contract and has hit the ground running. In the preseason game against the Lions, Chatman had three total tackles and a sack, further raising his stock.

Giants defensive line coach Andre Patterson had some strong words of support for Elijah Chatman this week.

"He's probably the strongest guy on the team."

Under past regimes, the New York Giants likely would've held onto Jordan Phillips until the end of the preseason before either cutting him and getting nothing in return or playing him due to his past performance. The Giants will now bet on their younger defensive tackles alongside Dexter Lawrence as Elijah Chatman, Jordon Riley, and DJ Davidson with the hope that one of them becomes a long-term piece in this defense.
