The New York Yankees are eagerly waiting for the return of third baseman D.J. LeMahieu, who is recovering from a foot injury in Spring Training that caused him to be placed on the injured list to begin the 2024 season.

Earlier this week, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that LeMahieu was beginning to take side-to-side grounders and mentioned that no rehab assignment was planned yet, per SNY.tv.

However, Boone spoke with the media ahead of Sunday’s series finale against Cleveland and provided more information on the next steps for LeMahieu.

Yankees Rumors: DJ LeMahieu Could Make Rehab Assignment This Week

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Sunday ahead of New York’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians that it’s possible when the team returns from this recent road trip that the veteran third baseman could make a rehab assignment, per Erik Boland of Newsday Sports.

Without LeMahieu on the field, the Yankees have rolled with Oswaldo Cabrera at third base, who has played well this season. The 25-year-old infielder slashed .317/.378/.585 with three home runs and 11 RBI.

Cabrera wasn’t hitting the ball well in Spring Training (.213 with two home runs and three RBI) but turned it around to kick off the regular season. Last season, Cabrera only hit .211 with five home runs and 29 RBI.

Meanwhile, LeMahieu only hit .222 with a double and three RBI in 10 Spring Training games before being sidelined by a foot injury.
