Biggest Giants vs. Cowboys Matchups to Watch in Week 4 Thursday Night Football
By Colin Chatto
After a big-time road win against the Cleveland Browns, the New York Giants, coming off of a short week, have an opportunity to do something they have not been able to do in quite some time. Daniel Jones is 1-7 against the Dallas Cowboys and 0-5 on Thursday night games, but why is it different this time around?
The Cowboys are in unfamiliar territory with a 1-2 record through the first three games of the regular season. That includes a blowout loss against the New Orleans Saints at home and a bone-bruising defeat at the Ravens' hands.
In those two games combined, the Cowboys' defense gave up 464 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. While a bulk of those touchdowns and rushing production came from All-Pro backs, the Giants' rushing attack has a great matchup in Thursday night's game.
Malik Nabers continues to be a big part of the Giants' offensive strategy, but the Cowboys have struggled against the run in the early part of the season. Even without Saquon Barkley, Brian Daboll has not shied away from running the football. Devin Singletary had 16 rushing attempts in back-to-back weeks with a total of 160 yards.
Daboll has slowly but surely incorporated Daniel Jones in the rushing game with eight rushing attempts in Week 3, and will have to use the same strategy Thursday night. It is a big part of Jones' game. Even after coming off a year full of injuries, calling plays that let him run the ball will have to happen.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Giants are paper-thin in the secondary. Adoree' Jackson and Dru Phillips are listed out for Thursday's game, which puts Deonte Banks in a tough spot against Ceedee Lamb. Lamb has yet to record over five receptions in the first three weeks of the season, but against the Giants has 722 receiving yards and three touchdowns in eight contests. The key for the Giants' secondary is to make Prescott go through Brandin Cooks and Jalen Tolbert.
The Giants' defensive line has a chance to give Prescott a difficult day. The Cowboys have allowed 12 sacks through the first three games of the year, while the Giants recorded eight against Cleveland. The pass rush for Big Blue showed that when playing with a lead, it can do some real damage. Even if trailing though, they still have a great opportunity to get to Prescott on Thursday night.
Should New York capitalize on these advantages, it can escape with a shocking victory.
