After a long summer of training camp practices, joint sessions, and a trio of games, the NFL preseason has come to its conclusion for the New York Giants, and with that comes the most difficult time of the league calendar.

By 4 pm on Tuesday, the Giants must have their current 90-man roster whittled down to 53 players for the start of the 2024 regular season. With the final preseason contest against the Jets behind them, Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll can now move forward with selecting the guys that they think can help the team succeed the most in the upcoming year.

Prior to the Jets game, there were still a few tightly contested roster battles to sort out, especially with injuries running rampant at several positions already. That said, decisions have to be made, and here is a group of nine Giants players who will likely receive bad news for their NFL futures.

ILB Carter Coughlin

For most of his time in New York, Carter Coughlin has been a staple piece to the team’s special teams department. In his 55 games played with the Giants, the 27-year-old has made just 41 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble, a production that isn’t matching what the team will expect from its interior run stuffers in Shane Bowen’s defense.

While he has been extremely reliable over the last two seasons—appearing in all of the last 34 games for the Giants—Coughlin has rarely been an impact guy even in his special teams reps. He finished with nine total tackles last fall in a mixed bag of snaps for the punt, kick, and field goal units but was very up and down in his final grades for those games.

At the same, the Giants have two other inside linebackers whom they’ve really liked in the preseason. One is Matthew Adams, a special teams savant who is dealing with an injury but the team is hoping it’s not serious enough to where he misses significant time. The other is Dyontae Johnson, the undrafted rookie out of Toledo, who had some nice flashes in the Detroit game posting a sack and two tackles for loss.

Depending on how serious those two players ailments are, there is a possibility Coughlin makes the roster so that the Giants can have security at the position to start the season. Still, it feels like they would rather go with one of the other options to round off the group.
