5 Yankees Who Won't Survive the Trade Deadline

We expect the Yankees to be in the market for pitching and middle infielders at this year's MLB trade deadline. The team must sacrifice talented prospects and veterans to address these positional needs. Here are five players in danger of being traded at the deadline.

1: 2B Gleyber Torres

One of the biggest concerns through the first half of the season has been the Yankees' second baseman at the plate. Last season, Torres was the team's most consistent hitter, but numbers have dropped astronomically. The 27-year-old went from hitting .273/.347/.453 to .223/.307/.347. His home-run hitting has regressed significantly.

Torres has also struggled defensively, which has not helped his performance this year. The Yankees second baseman has 11 errors this season; he totaled 15 last season and nearly achieved that mark in the first half of this season. The two-time All-Star was even benched by Yankees' manager Aaron Boone for Game 2 of the Subway Series after the team's first loss to the Mets due to a critical error in the sixth inning and failing to run out a grounder in the eighth.

Not to mention, Torres is a free agent following this season, so if these numbers don't improve, the Yankees could be looking to trade him by this year's trade deadline. Cashman will be looking for replacements at second base at the deadline if Gleyber doesn't turn his performance around at the plate or in the field in the remainder of July.

The Yankees have expressed interest in Miami Marlins outfielder, second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., and lefty reliever Tanner Scott, who is having an electric 2024 campaign. The former All-Star Chisholm can play outfield, second base, and shortstop. He is an excellent lead-off hitter, which the Yankees have been looking for all season to hit ahead of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Jazz has a .249 average this year, with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs, and a .727 OPS. On the other hand, Scott has a 1.34 ERA, 10.04 strikeouts per nine, an 82.1% left-on-base rate, and a 48.9% ball rate over 40.1 innings.

Gleyber was previously linked to Miami when the Marlins were discussing right-handed starting pitcher Pablo Lopez to New York two seasons ago, but the Yankees rejected their offer. If Miami is still interested in the Yankees infielder, both sides can agree this time, but we'll see if Cashman goes through with trading Torres.
