5 Yankees Who Won't Survive the Trade Deadline

We expect the Yankees to be in the market for pitching and middle infielders at this year's MLB trade deadline. The team must sacrifice talented prospects and veterans to address these positional needs. Here are five players in danger of being traded at the deadline.

4: INF Oswald Peraza

Yankee fans are familiar with Oswald Peraza. The infield prospect was a late call-up last season with Everson Pereira when Billy McKinney was placed on the IL and Greg Allen was designated for assignment. LeMahieu was injured, and Josh Donaldson was released, which allowed Peraza to get an opportunity at third base. He hit .191 and had two home runs and 14 RBIs in 52 games.

Coming up through the minors, Peraza's defense at shortstop was impressive. He was marveled more than 2023 rookie Gold Glover Anthony Volpe and the two competed every spring for opportunities. Still, in the end, the New Jersey native won the job. He was also a threat at the plate at every level, which made him a top-five prospect in MLB Pipeline's rankings every year from 2020-23. Peraza's stock is down as he struggled last season in the majors and has missed time due to injuries this year. We'll see if Cashman moves on from the highly-touted infield prospect at this year's deadline.

3: LHP Caleb Ferguson

While the Yankees could use pitching help, it wouldn't be shocking if the team traded one of its current relievers as a piece to acquire something else. We've seen Cashman do this a few times at the deadline in recent years, so it wouldn't be surprising if he did it again this year.

In 2018, the Yankees traded Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos to the St. Louis Cardinals for Luke Voit. In 2016, Cashman traded Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for McKinney, Torres, and Adam Warren. They also traded Andrew Miller to the Cleveland Indians that same deadline for Clint Frazier.

The Yankees could look to trade left-handed relief pitcher Caleb Ferguson. The team acquired the 28-year-old in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the start of the season. Ferguson has a 5.28 ERA, 36 strikeouts, and a 1.48 WHIP in 29 innings. With Ian Hamilton, Scott Effross, Cody Poteet, and eventually Clarke Schmidt set to return from injury at some point, there may need to be more room for the struggling lefty on the Yankees' active roster.
