3. Carl Lawson

When the Jets signed Carl Lawson in the spring of 2021 many fans and people within the organization were elated. New York thought they signed their marquee pass-rusher but things never materialized.

Lawson suffered a torn Achilles in a joint practice with the Green Bay Packers that forced him to miss the entire 2021 season. He rehabbed his way onto the field and played in all 17 games in 2022 but things seemed to hit a wall the following year.

In 2023, Lawson only played in six games, logging five total tackles and zero sacks. He was even a healthy scratch for multiple games throughout the season.

The Jets now have one of the deepest defensive lines in the league. The group currently features Jermaine Johnson, John Franklin-Myers, Will McDonald IV, and Quinnen Williams so it made things difficult for Lawson to get on the field.

Joe Douglas even reworked Lawson's deal last May so now they would be hit with a $6.3 million dead cap hit in 2024 per Spotrac.

It is time that both sides moved on and went their separate ways. New York's defensive line has more than enough difference makers so they won't be missing much by letting Lawson walk.
