3 Available Guards the Giants Must Target in Free Agency
2. Mike Onwenu, G
Guard Mike Onwenu is another intriguing option for the G-Men, who is going to become an unrestricted free agent in the next couple of days. Onwenu was drafted in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Over the past four years, Onwenu displayed his toughness, versatility, and a knack for playing bully ball. Across his four NFL seasons, the Michigan product has played both guard and tackle with the Patriots.
The ability to play multiple positions is an underrated factor because injuries are bound to happen. Onwenu played in a whopping 850 offensive snaps and logged a 71.5 PFF grade in 2023.
OvertheCap estimates Onwenu will sign a deal for roughly $14.5 million per year. With a dire need along the offensive line, the Giants should certainly express interest in bringing him to town.
3. Jonah Jackson, G
Jonah Jackson is another member of the 2020 draft class. Jackson was selected in the third round by the Detroit Lions from The Ohio State University. The 27-year-old has excellent contact balance that allows him to stay engaged when getting hit.
He thrives as a pass-blocker and takes superb angles as a run-blocker. Jackson logged a 76.4 PFF run-blocking grade in 2021 and 70.3 in 2022.
Last season, New York allowed a league-high 85 sacks so they need to add quality players upfront.
Jackson could immediately step in and improve that unit.
