The New York Jets' Handling of Robert Saleh Was an Outright Disaster
The New York Jets have finally made a change, firing head coach Robert Saleh just five games into the season. The timing is the only surprising factor though this news comes as the Jets are in the midst of a two-game losing streak.
For the time being, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has been promoted to interim head coach and will be tasked with turning this season around.
The writing was on the wall for Robert Saleh as the Jets looked hopeless at home against the Broncos before losing a game they easily could've won this weekend in London. The comment that likely ended the Robert Saleh era was linebacker Quincy Williams stating that people need to start taking accountability within the team.
This move had to be made with it seeming like Robert Saleh had lost the locker room, illustrated by the fact that the majority of the fanbase and members of the media view this as a program being run by Aaron Rodgers.
While firing Saleh is likely the right move, the way the Jets handled the situation with their head coach was simply a disaster. Given how short of a leash Woody Johnson had Saleh on this season it indicates that the move should've been done this offseason.
Proven winners as head coaches in the NFL were available this entire offseason. While Bill Belichick would've never been the hire, a coach like Mike Vrabel stands out as a name the Jets seriously should have considered.
All of last season, there were grumblings of massive disconnects within the organization and the right move would have been cleaning house and getting the right staff in before the start of the year. Ulbrich now has to turn this team around on a short week as the group returns from London to face the Bills in a game that'll weigh heavily on the AFC East race.
At some point, Joe Douglas has to take some blame, as a majority of Saleh's shortcomings can be placed on Douglas. The general manager whiffed on a quarterback with the second overall pick, causing the Jets to go all in on a quarterback that is in his 40s. Paying Rodgers all of this money has caused the team to lose pieces like Bryce Huff in free agency as they try to handle the salary cap.
The Jets' chess move to replace Huff was trading for Haason Reddick, who has yet to show up with the organization as he awaits a new contract.
Then again, this firing continues to prove that Rodgers is actually one of the key people making decisions for this franchise. The Jets fired Saleh but have kept Nathanial Hackett employed despite the offense being the biggest issue. New York's defense is allowing just 15 points per game while the offense, which has a ton of resources dumped into it, is scoring just 18.6 points per contest.
The Jets hired a defensive coordinator as head coach and while that requires a great offensive coordinator, Saleh held up his end of the bargain.
The Jets should undergo massive changes because of their offseason mistakes
For a team that considered themselves Super Bowl contenders, the Jets handled themselves poorly this offseason. The biggest move was to go out and trade for Haason Reddick which has quickly become a massive distraction for this team. Firing Saleh this quickly into the year shows that a decision should have been made this past offseason rather than rolling the dice.
The biggest kicker of it all is that Christopher Johnson hired Saleh while Woody was overseas, yet Woody was the one to let him go.
