In 60 games, the New York Yankees have struggled to take over the American League East, but does that hurt them in the postseason?

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York Yankees were seen as a team that could dominate, but no one expected a shortened season. No expected injuries to affect the way it did for the 2019 season. With the Yankees likely heading into the postseason as the fifth seed, do they still have a chance to win the World Series?

Before the season started, the New York Yankees were without Domingo German who was serving a suspension, and they were without Luis Severino who had just received Tommy John Surgery. Throughout the season, they would lose starters to the injured list.

Within the 60 game season, the Yankees suffered a seven-game losing streak, and with that, the Tampa Bay Rays took over first place. Do you put the blame on the manager or do you blame the shortened season?

More from New York Yankees

Often, a team would have a whole month to prepare for a 162 game season, but due to the pandemic, there was a proximate four-month hiatus. It doesn’t help that the league and the players association couldn’t come to an agreement quickly. Teams didn’t have enough time to regroup from the time off.

With a 60 game season, there has been a lot of new stipulations taking place. The designated hitter has been implemented within both leagues, and there are additional spots included in the postseason, plus the new extra-inning rule where teams start with a runner on second base. Nobody could’ve expected the Yankees to find the groove right away, just like the Marlins fighting for a playoff spot.

Although they lost Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, James Paxton, and Gleyber Torres for some time, they found a way to compete. In addition to that, nobody predicted Torres and Gary Sanchez to not have the season they were expected to have.
