Utilize Defensive Depth

One of the most pleasant surprises for the Jets last season was their 16th ranked overall defense, despite inconsistent cornerback play. As injuries piled up, young backups stepped into bigger roles, leaving the Jets with plenty of experience and depth in 2020. A large part of the credit must go to defensive coordinator Gregg Williams who did a fantastic job at masking the defense’s weaknesses.

Unfortunately, the Giants could not do the same. Finishing 30th in overall defense, the Giants underwent a makeover this off-season. First, in free agency, the team brought back Leonard Williams and Markus Golden while adding Blake Martinez at inside linebacker. They also signed veterans James Bradberry and Logan Ryan to improve one of the league’s worst secondaries. Then, on draft night, they spent seven picks on the defensive side of the ball.

Of course, there are only 11 starters on defense. However, neither team has many players as staples long-term. Each and every player is fighting to prove themselves, leading to plenty of in-season competition. With a steady dose of experience and youth, Gase and Judge must make sure they take advantage of their depth, keeping everyone fresh and motivated to make a name for themselves.
