Game Three

Tampa Bay Rays @ New York Yankees

TBD vs. James Paxton

Thursday, August 20th, 1:05 pm

In game three the Yankees will put James Paxton on the mound who in 2020 holds a record of 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA. Not ideal at all, but aside from his first start where he was pulled after failing to record a single out in the second following three earned runs on five hits and a walk from the Nationals, he has been much better.

He has yet to reach the level which we have seen him pitch in the past as he has allowed three earned runs in each start, but he has been serviceable for the Yankees with his 1-1 record.

Paxton has allowed a total of 12 earned runs on 22 hits, with 18 strikeouts and only three walks in four starts this season. 12 earned runs certainly isn’t HORRIBLE through four starts, but it could certainly be better.

The good news for the Yankees is they know exactly what they’re getting out of Paxton each time he takes the bump. With exactly three earned runs per start with 5.5 hits to go with it, Paxton is decent and if the Yankees’ bats are doing their part, the Yankees should be able to get the job done.

More from New York Yankees

As for the Rays, their starting pitcher has yet to be announced, but I would imagine Ryan Yarbrough will get the nod as his last start was August 15th against the Blue Jays.

Despite his 0-2 record, Yarbrough has had a decent start to his 2020 season, holding a 4.13 ERA while allowing a total of 23 hits in five starts. Yarbrough has yet to make a start against the Yankees this season, but if he does get the nod in game three, he will have his hands full.

Prediction: Yankees win 6-4

I foresee Paxton having another decent start allowing a couple of earned runs and several hits, but he does a good enough job to help the Yankees take their second of three against Tampa.

As for the Rays, if they do in fact start Yarbrough, he will have to do his job as he has simply been average this season and will certainly be looking for his first win of the season. I don’t believe he will get his first win against the Yankees, but we will have to wait and see.
