The New York Yankees played their first exhibition game on Saturday night in Queens against the New York Mets, and they were wearing a navy jersey, could this jersey be added to the rotation?

The New York Yankees have tradition, they only wear two jerseys, one hat, no names on the jerseys, players can’t have facial hair, nor should they have long hair, or get new tattoos, and plenty of other rules. However, on Saturday night the Bronx Bombers wore a jersey that has never been seen in the regular season.

The Yankees wore a navy blue jersey with the words “New York” in gray, outlined in white across the front. Now, before I move on, I am fully aware that this was just an exhibition game and it might not mean anything, but hear me out.

As of late, plenty of players have spoken out against the Yankees prohibiting players from doing certain things with their image, and we have also seen players such as Aaron Judge say how much they loved their players weekend jerseys which were all black in 2019.

In addition to this, the Yankees let a player wear the number zero for the first time in franchise history when Adam Ottavino donned it last season and will do so again this season.

This being said, the Yankees are lightening up a little bit on their classic rules, and there is a chance that the addition of a third jersey could be next. Ever since summer camp started, we have seen only two jerseys, both navy blue versions of the Yankees’ home and road jerseys.

Here is what they have been wearing during summer camp at Yankee Stadium:

This is a navy blue jersey with a white logo and white numbers, just a navy blue version of their home pinstripes jersey.

In all honesty, I think both jerseys look good, HOWEVER, that does not mean I want the Yankees to add either of these into their jersey rotation. I’m a big believer in tradition, and I love that the Yankees are a franchise built on tradition.

They are one of only two teams in Major League Baseball to wear only two jerseys, the only team In baseball not to have names on the back of their away jerseys, and they are the only team in the MLB to do several other things.

This might be odd to some and some might not like that, and I understand that, but I love that the Yankees are so unique, and if it ain’t broke, why fix it? I understand that times are changing, and with Nike being the uniform manufacturer now, there might be some other options, but that doesn’t mean the Yankees should change.

What do you think, should the Yankees add a third jersey into the rotation and do away with their tradition of having only two, and if so, which of these two jerseys would you prefer? Let us know in the comments below, or on Twitter at @EmpireWritesBck!
