New York Yankees: How a canceled season impacts the Bombers
How a Canceled Season Would Help the Yankees:
Although a canceled 2020 MLB Season would negatively impact the Yankees, they would also be helped quite a bit.
The New York Yankees were set to begin this season with a plethora of players out for an extended period. If the 2020 season were canceled altogether, they would enter the 2021 season, presumably without a single player on the injured list.
Here is a list of players scheduled to miss significant time in 2020:
- Luis Severino (Tommy John surgery, out for the season)
- Aaron Hicks (Tommy John surgery, out until mid-season)
- James Paxton (back surgery, out until possibly June)
- Aaron Judge (stress fracture in rib, TBD)
- Giancarlo Stanton (calf strain, out until possibly April)
Except for James Paxton, who would become a free agent with a canceled season, every single one of these players would be set to return to play in 2021, assuming they were to make a full recovery by March/April.
Another positive note about a canceled 2020 season would be the fact that Domingo German would be able to return without missing a game. German still has to miss 63 games due to a suspension, but if the 2020 season gets canceled, he wouldn’t have to serve the suspension.
The Yankees would have a stacked starting pitching roster if they can manage to bring back Masahiro Tanaka or another highly rated starting pitcher. In addition to this, the Yankees would be able to sign players who could give them an even better chance of winning their 28th World Series Championship.
Lastly, the Yankees would be positively impacted by some of their biggest competitors who are negatively impacted.
Key Astros players who would become free agents:
Key Dodgers players who would become free agents:
Key Rays players who would become free agents:
- Charlie Morton (vesting option)
- Mike Zunino
- Aaron Loup
- Chris Herrmann
The Astros, Dodgers, and Rays are the biggest threats to the Yankees winning the World Series in 2020, but in 2021 there’s a chance that the Astros and Dodgers could look much different.
Both Houston and Los Angeles would lose key players vital to their hopes of winning it all. At the end of the day, that would help the Yankees hopes of winning their 28th championship.
Although the Yankees would be negatively impacted by a canceled 2020 season, they would also be positively impacted believe it or not. Keep these in mind as decisions get made in the coming weeks and months about the MLB season.
