These New York Yankees players are primed for a big 2020 season
Batter: Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres is ready to be a centerpiece of the New York Yankees offense this season. With Didi Gregorius’ free agent departure to Philadelphia, Torres will be slated as the Yankees everyday shortstop, instead of switching between second base and short like he did last season, while Gregorius rehabbed from Tommy John surgery.
The 23-year-old infielder finished last season batting .278 with 38 home runs and 90 RBI. Gleyber was also the Yankees best postseason hitter, He posted a .324 batting average with three home runs and 10 RBI.
Because he can do so many different things at the plate, Torres was constantly jumping around the batting order. Here are the spots in the batting order where he was placed along with the number of times he appeared there:
- Leadoff – 2
- Second – 1
- Third – 16
- Cleanup – 32
- Fifth – 35
- Sixth – 28
- Seventh – 19
- Eighth – 10
Expect Torres to be slotted into the heart of the order (third, fourth, or fifth) regularly in 2020. He occupied those slots for half the season (81 games) and produced for the Yankees.
Gleyber is set for a breakout season, with the bountiful amount of talent he has as well as the table setters around him. He’s a leading candidate to be this year’s Yankees MVP. Torres could even be in the conversation for American League MVP. New York needs their two-time all-star to be an anchor of the lineup that the team can rely on.
2020 Projection: Consistent hitter and run producer. Yankees MVP for 2020 season.
