Round of 8

No. 3 Seton Hall Pirates vs No.1 Gonzaga Bulldogs

If San Diego State was the frying pan, Gonzaga is the fire. A very, very hot fire. The Zags spent a good part of 2019-20 atop the college basketball polls, eventually ending the regular season ranked second in the nation behind Kansas. The Bulldogs also field a team that the United Nations would be proud of with six international players. There is no distance too far for head coach Mark Few to travel for a quality player.

Last season Gonzaga was led by Japanese import Rui Hachimora, this time it’s 6-11 Filip Petrusev. The Serbian center led the 31-2 Bulldogs in scoring and rebounding. He was one of six players for Few who averaged double-digit scoring. Gonzaga can beat any team, at any time, in a variety of different styles. Could Seton Hall pull off a major upset?

More from Empire Writes Back

I wish I could tell you they did. On this night Gonzaga was the better team. For the majority of the game, the score was fairly close. Once again Powell struggled with his shooting as he only converted on 2-of-7 from three-point range, the senior’s last college game ended with 15 points.

This time McKnight wasn’t much help, he shot below 40 percent from the floor for the first time in the tournament. Of course, Petrusev was the game’s leading scorer (16) and rebounder (8). Corey Kispert added 13 points, and Killian Tillie had 11.

Final Score: GU 77 – SHU 71

Per our SIM, the Seton Hall Pirates made to the Elite Eight, just a step away from a trip to NOLA for the final four. In our five-game Regional Finals simulation, the results were much closer. The Zags still won three games, but a 30-point blowout skewed the average results.
