New York Jets top 5 free agents cornerback targets
The New York Jets had a very solid defense in 2019, ranking in the NFL’s top 10. Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams and company only look to get better next season.
The New York Jets came into 2019 with lots of hope. Gang Green fans knew the strongest part of this team was going to be the defense, even with the many signings they made for more offense.
They brought in defensive mastermind Gregg Williams to help redefine this promising defense led by all-pro safety Jamal Adams and free-agent middle linebacker signing CJ Mosley. It ended up being a rollercoaster type season for the Jets defense.
Although Brian Poole was solid in the slot, the Jets starting cornerbacks Truman Johnson and Daryl Roberts were horrible. So horrible that Adam Gase and Williams decided the two would be benched for lesser-known Bless Austin and Arthur Maulet.
The Jets defense finished the season second in rushing yards against and the seventh-best in total yards against. But in passing yards against, they ranked 17th. Much of the success against the pass had to do with the best safety in the NFL. Jamal Adams and his sidekick Marcus May. The pair can’t do everything. Which is exactly why the New York Jets need to get some help in the secondary.
While the draft does have some promising corners such as Jeff Okudah the Jets should be more focused on building an already young offense around Sam Darnold. With an already good front seven, they need to sign some guys that will complement the defense nicely.
While Maulet and Austin were very good down the stretch we don’t really know how they will play against better opponents. They make nice depth pieces for sure but it would be nice to see the Jets bring in a top cover corner.
