The New York Islanders traded for then signed J.G. Pageau to a six-year $30M contract extension at the NHL trade deadline. They have gone “all in” to build a winner.

The Metropolitan Division is stacked at this point. Carolina, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, and NYR are all fighting for a playoff spot with the New York Islanders. Each of the contenders has gotten hot at the right time. With the Metro becoming more and more competitive, the Isles needed to upgrade their team.

The New York Islanders found a trade partner in Ottawa. Jean-Gabriel “J.G.” Pageau was acquired by Isles General Manager Lou Lamoriello in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in 2020 and second-round pick in 2020, in addition to a conditional third found pick in 2022. After acquiring the pivot, Uncle Lou then went to work.

He signed Pageau to a contract extension which avoids the center becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Ottawa native, known for his defense and faceoff ability, was having a career scoring year with 40 points in 60 games for the Sens. Pageau and Lamoriello agreed on a six-year, $30M deal.

This is a huge move for the Islanders as the team is pushing to make the playoffs. They started this season strong, but have faced some struggles of late. At the time the NHL went on hiatus due to COVID-19, the Isles were losers of seven straight and 11-of-13. By picking up only eight of 26 possible points, the Isles dropped out of the last Wild Card spot.

More from Empire Writes Back

Pageau has played six games with the Islanders so far and has two goals, but is also -6. His defensive struggles might be because he isn’t used to this group of players yet. He did spend eight years with Ottawa. The more games he plays with the New York Islanders the more Pageau will fit in.

This signing was a smart move by Lamoriello. Even though obvious strains are going on, things should pick up when the season resumes. For this to happen though, not only does this team need to light it up, but Pageau has to start making more of an impact. He needs to contribute more on both ends. He doesn’t have to be a leader, but his presence has to be seen in every game if the Islanders are going to complete their quest for the playoffs.
