New York Jets: Dissecting GM Joe Douglas’ press conference
Jamal Adams to be a Jet for life
The first and foremost, one of the most memorable moments during Douglas’ presser was that he stated that he had a plan for Jamal Adams. That plan is for No. 33 to be a Jet for life.
If fans remember during the 2019 season, Adams was pretty upset when there were mentions of him in trade rumors. He took that as an insult and was adamant that he wanted to stay with the New York Jets and for a long time at that.
Douglas and Head Coach Adam Gase then had to do some damage control because they did not want the team to lose focus. Nor did they want Adams to be distracted by the news, or feel that he was not valued on the team. So Douglas had a meeting with Adams where they hashed their issues out (or as much as we know of) and Adams continued to perform at a high level.

Now as Douglas mentioned in the video, the Jets are working with Adams agent on a long-term deal right now for the star safety. And it’s great the Douglas is being proactive because the last thing Gang Green needs is a hold out from Adams. That would lead to even further complications between the two sides which could cause disruption in the locker room.
Also, being able to lock up Adams on a reasonable contract now before he hits free agency is a smart move. The Jets will be able to maintain salary cap flexibility in the future in order to address any other potential team needs.
