New York Jets: Top five free agent wide receiver targets
The New York Jets still need lots of help on the offensive side of the ball which includes a playmaker at receiver. Let’s take a look at the top five free agent wide receivers Gang Green should target this offseason.
The New York Jets have some promising young pieces on offense. They have a young franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold, star running back in Leveon Bell, and the tight end duo of Ryan Griffin and Chris Herndon. The only thing missing is the go-to wide receiver that the offense can rely on to make a big play when necessary. Currently, NYJ has nice complementary receivers but not a good primary one.
In 2019, Gang Green’s offense ranked 31st in points, last in total yards, and 29th in passing yards, so there is reason to believe they are in need of some upgrades. The offense has to score points to win games and a star receiver can do that. It’s time Darnold had a top-shelf wideout to throw to instead of check downs to Bell because no one is open downfield.
The receivers the Jets currently have on their roster are Jamison Crowder, Quincy Enunwa, Vyncint Smith and a few others. Demaryius Thomas and Robby Anderson are both free agents this offseason and there is reason to believe they will both walk.
Crowder is a very good slot receiver and made a nice impact for the New York Jets last season. He should not, however, be the number one receiver on the depth chart. Additionally, Enunwa missed last season with the second major neck injury of his career. He may not be the player he once was when he comes back. If he can come back at all.
This is also a very good wide receiver draft and many people believe the Jets should take a top receiver with the 11th pick. With guys like Ceedee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy, it makes sense for the Jets to bring one of them in. Then again by signing a free agent receiver, they can use their first-round pick on some much needed offensive line help and protect Darnold.
Let’s look at some of the top free agent receivers available for the Jets to sign.
