New York Knicks: Why Leon Rose is the right man to fix the Knicks
By Teresa Powe
Leon Rose is rumored to be named the New York Knicks next president of basketball operations. Who is Leon Rose and why does Dolan think he is the one who will right this franchise?
Leon Rose is currently listed 14th on the Forbes list of most powerful agents in sports. He pulled down $38M in commissions last year with over $900M in player contracts. He has an expansive client list which includes Carmelo Anthony, Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Joel Embiid among others. The New York Knicks need his kind of connections.
According to staff writers at the New York Daily News, “Leon Rose and William “World Wide” Wesley are two of the most powerful men in the NBA.”
As an already very successful CAA agent, why is he getting into the muck and mire of the New York Knicks? You could speculate it’s for the money. You could say it’s the New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden, the most famous arena in the world. The Knicks are a mess. What are Rose’s credentials to fix this mess?
When it was first rumored that Rose was to be the next president, it was also rumored that William “World Wide” Wesley would be joining him. When I heard this it was an “aha” moment. Rose may not know a lot about basketball operations from the management side but he knows the business of the NBA and has nearly $1B of negotiated contracts to prove it.
Additionally, he would be bringing Wesley, the man who knows a lot about a lot. Wesley would be helping the Knicks get premium talent to come to NYC. He is rumored to be the man who recruited players to sign with Rose at CAA.
Then almost as suddenly the rumor mill quickly stated that Wesley would in fact not be joining Rose. As per Adam Zagoria of Forbes:
"Wesley is still expected to consult with Rose and help the Knicks while avoiding official scrutiny from the NBA. Just this past weekend, Wesley was with Rose and Rod Strickland of the G League watching the SMU-Temple game. After the game on Saturday, Wesley and Strickland went to the prestigious Metro Classic in Toms River, N.J. to watch top high school players, including Bronny James. Several of the players at the event are projected NBA lottery picks in 2021 and beyond. The Knicks have seven first-round picks across the next four years.More from New York KnicksNew York Knicks Fall to Eighth After NBA Draft LotteryNew York Knicks: Players to Draft in Worst-Case Lottery ScenarioNew York Knicks: Three Players Who Should Thrive Under Tom ThibodeauIs Devin Booker to the New York Knicks Realistic?New York Knicks: Tom Thibodeau Officially Hired as Head Coach"
It is beyond time for the New York Knicks franchise to get its house in order. Will Leon Rose be the one to succeed? Will outside help from his “consultant” be the boost that New York finally needs to get its house in order? Quite possibly.
Needless to say, the team can’t keep going as it has been for the last several years. The culture has to change and Rose is now the man to do it.
Speculation is that it will take some time for Rose to separate himself from his 18 clients. New York Knicks fans once again have to wait and see what changes will be made to create the winning culture they so deserve.
