2019-20 Big East Conference Basketball Power Rankings 6.0
By Dan Stokes
7. Creighton Bluejays (7-4, 18-6)
The Bluejays have remained ranked despite dropping back two spots to No. 23 in the AP Poll. Creighton suffered a disheartening 73-56 road loss to Providence. However, playing a reeling St. John’s squad, who’ve only managed to defeat DePaul twice, Creighton was able to bounce back and defeat the Johnnies handily. Greg McDermott‘s squad should be dancing. They could end up as a No. 7 or 8 seed that makes a run come March.
6. Providence Friars (6-5, 13-11)
Ed Cooley’s Friars squad went 1-1. With a quality win over Creighton and a narrow loss to Xavier, this team is still trying to find its identity. I’m sticking to my word that they could be a sleeper to win the Big East Tournament.
Providence boasts three players in double figures. Alpha Diallo leads the way with an average of 12.9 points and 7.7 rebounds, followed by David Duke with 12.5 points and center Nate Watson at 10.1 points.
5. Villanova Wildcats (7-4, 17-6)
The No. 15 Wildcats are slumping at the wrong time. Currently on a three-game skid, Jay Wright‘s squad needs to get back to its winning ways. Saddiq Bey has come on strong pacing out Collin Gillespie for the team scoring lead, averaging 15.9 points and 5.1 rebounds.
A “lighter” schedule (the Big East shouldn’t be taken for granted) with only two ranked opponents left, can help Villanova to regain their momentum. It’s not a new situation for Wright. The Wildcats have gone on to win a National Championship after struggling at the end of the regular season.
4. Butler Bulldogs (6-5, 18-6)
It’s been a tale of two seasons for the No. 19 Bulldogs. After shocking the nation by jumping out to a 12-1 non-conference record, Butler has struggled mightily in the Big East Conference, playing at just over a .500 clip.
It’s another week for me to sing my praises about one of the best guards in the nation, Kamar Baldwin. Baldwin paces LaVall Jordan‘s squad with 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.
