FanSided recently released FanSided 250—the “ultimate ranking of fandoms” across sports, entertainment, celebrities, and gaming—and no surprise, the New York Yankees made the list, ranked fourteenth overall!

I was proud to see that the New York Yankees are still one of the most popular sports franchises out there regardless of national baseball interest declining. I mean, the Bronx Bombers were eighth in terms of all sports-related rankings, fifth among all sports teams, and number one for all baseball-related rankings.

Because FanSided 250 methodology seeks to capture the energy surrounding different popular entities, their ranking confirms the popularity of the Yankees even though “about 68.5 million fans attended major league games during the 2019 regular season, down from a peak of nearly 80 million in 2007″ (according to Juliette Love of the New York Times). Considering these statistics, the Yankees could have been ranked even lower on the list.

Still, I am disappointed the Yankees fell eight spots since last year when they were ranked sixth. As a New Yorker myself, I demand that my teams strive for excellence in all aspects, including fandom.

I believe the Yankees’ ranking dropped because the “bandwagoners” came out of the woodworks for the Los Angeles Clippers (#8) and the Los Angeles Lakers (#2). The latter was not even ranked on the 2018 list while the former ranked fifty-first. So clearly the “buzz” for these teams increased based on offseason acquisitions, which gives both teams a shot at the NBA championship.

The list captures popular culture at a moment in time, but what is so great about the Yankees is that unlike these L.A. teams, New York Yankees Fandom is not transient. Granted the franchise tends to attract bandwagoners because of their greatness, there is still a very steady fanbase. We made the top twenty despite not making the World Series this year.

The Yankees are the best team in MLB history and the most winningest franchise across all professional sports. 27 Rings baby! Not to mention they are located in one of the greatest cities in the world.

And to keep it 100, according to Bleacher Report’s Zach Pumerantz, the Yankees ranked second (behind Manchester United) as one of the most popular sports teams! I believe this well-established team will continue to perform, fans will continue to be excited, and the fandom will always be top twenty.

Personally, I am not worried about the Yankees popularity and their FanSided ranking. I actually expect them to be back in the top 10 next year. We just signed Gerrit Cole, brought back Brett Garnder, and GM Brian Cashman most likely has something else up his sleeve. Fanatics will be flooding the gates Opening Day to witness greatness.

You can find me steadily rooting for the Yankees, while we watch the Clippers and Lakers get outranked in 2020’s FanSided 250 by another franchise’s bandwagoners.
