Catcher

One of the most polarizing players on the Yankees is catcher, Gary Sanchez. Fans point to his poor defense as the focus of their frustration with him. Although not a top defensive catcher, he has worked hard to improve that aspect of the game. At the plate, however, Sanchez has few equals.

He probably gets nicked up more than the fans are lead to believe. Additionally, his prolonged slumps are a concern, but when he’s “on,” Sanchez is one of the top hitting catchers in the game. As it stands, there is no plan B. Among the departing free agents is last year’s back up, Austin Romine. Kyle Higashioka is the number-two for now. He’s a competent defensive backstop.

Designated Hitter

It’s not that Giancarlo Stanton is a bad outfielder. On the contrary, he plays a decent left field. Most in Pinstripe Nation will agree that his best value to the New York Yankees is as their designated hitter.

Injuries cut him down to 59 at-bats in 2019. Even so, he managed a .894 OPS. For the first time in his career, Stanton reached base at over a 40 percent clip. Expect to see some cameos at DH by Andujar, Judge, and Sanchez, when the catcher gets a day off from behind the plate.

Recap

Even if the Yankees don’t add another big hitter in the offseason and their non-pitchers remain the same, they still have a powerful lineup. 1B Luke Voit/ Mike Ford platoon, 2B DJ LeMahieu, SS Gleyber Torres, 3B Miguel Andujar, LF Mike Tauchman/ Clint Frazier platoon, CF Aaron Hicks, RF Aaron Judge, C Gary Sanchez, DH Giancarlo Stanton.

Cashman can afford to be picky about who he adds to the mix and wait to see how the season shakes out. That way he can put his free agent money into getting a top of the rotation starter.
