The New York Mets missed the playoffs again in 2019 but walked out winners of several individual honors and a new manager

The 2019 New York Mets aren’t going to be remembered for winning many games outside of their midseason streak. They fired manager Mickey Callaway after only two seasons and once again fell short of the postseason.

The franchise, however, is welcoming a new voice into the locker room with the hiring of former all-star Carlos Beltran as manager. Beltran brings no managerial experience to the table but isn’t far removed from his playing days, making him relatable to the young talent. The former world series champion played several memorable seasons for the Mets and understood the pressures of succeeding in New York City.

The other significant accomplishment from the team is at the end of the season award category. Rookie home run champion Pete Alonso walked away easily with the rookie of the year award shattering records and baseballs along the way. Alonso finished 2019 with the single-season record for home runs by a Mets player and rookie in Major League Baseball.

Alonso shared his focus and excitement for next season during an interview with the New York Post.

"“I’m just looking to try to be even better next year and win more games, and get to the playoffs and win a championship,’’ Alonso said Monday night. “I just want to put every single ounce of myself into winning and bringing a championship to Queens.”"

Mets Ace Jacob deGrom walked away with his second consecutive National League CY Young award. deGrom was dominant once again in 2019, consistently keeping batters guessing and off-balance at the plate. The multiple-time All-Star had a National League-high 255 strikeouts and a 2.43 ERA in 204 innings.

The Mets have shown in the past to have the talent to win a championship, and hopefully, the new manager will be the vital piece to the puzzle. Spring training will be right around the corner after the holidays.
