New York Yankees need to hire former pitcher David Cone
The New York Yankees made it official on Monday they are in the market for a new pitching coach opening the door for David Cone.
David Cone was a consistent contributor to the New York Yankees organization since joining the team in 1995. He spent five seasons in pinstripes as a player and most notably pitching a perfect game 20 years ago that no fan will never forget.
The Yankees decided to part ways with Larry Rothschild, after nine seasons, has Cone’s name emerging as a serious candidate to take over the duties. Cone officially has no coaching experience has been viewed by many in the league as an expert in the techniques. In his current role as a broadcaster for the Yankees, Cone is consistently breaking down a pitcher’s form and delivery.
The Yankees and Cone have continued to have a good relationship over the years. He has made appearances on behalf of the team to talk about the championship seasons and is a regular participant in the annual ’Old Timers Day’ festivities. The addition of Come won’t feel like a stranger is joining the franchise because he fully understands the culture of winning.
The 56-year-old hasn’t been shy about his interest in managing or coaching in today’s league. In an interview, according to the New York Post, Cone was interested in the New York Mets job that is still vacant and is willing to work as a pitching coach if not offered the opportunity.
"“I am at that point in my life that if something like (Mets manager) presents itself I have to seriously consider it — if not now, when?” Cone said. “If I am going to fully immerse myself back into the game, now would be the time.”"
The coaching bug is out there for Cone, and it would make sense to keep him home in the Bronx. The new last thing the Yankees or their fans want to see is Cone in Queens wearing Mets colors again in any capacity.
