Brooklyn Nets are still torn between two franchise centers
The Brooklyn Nets are still trying to find stability in their starting lineup but are still stuck at the center position.
Jarrett Allen and DeAndre Jordan are two proven centers in the NBA, and both are trying to get a defined role with the Brooklyn Nets. Allen was a serviceable starter last season for Brooklyn while Jordan brings the All-Star reputation.
The duo of big men will be an essential factor in the Nets quest to become a championship contender. The issue that has begun to hover over the team in the early stages of the 2019-2020 season is who will get the primary minutes per game. The starter has been Allen, but history has shown that it doesn’t matter who starts. It’s really about who finishes games.
Jordan and Allen spoke recently to the New York Post about their play in the first three games.
Jordan is a former All-Star, All-NBA First Team center and Olympic gold medalist, explained his adjustment to a new team and playbook.
"“It’s definitely weird, just finding a rhythm, trying to see how and where we fit as a whole,” Jordan said. “It’s something that’s gonna come with time. I’m gonna do whatever the team needs from me to be successful.”"
Allen’s response was also very team-oriented as he continues to try and build from last season’s averages of 10.9 points on 59 percent shooting.
"“You know, I would say [I’ve been struggling] a little bit. I turned the ball over, and not making shots I need to, not being assertive like I need to,” Allen said. “It’s a mixture of both; I need to be assertive and I also need to calm down.”"
The Nets have dropped two of their first three games and have decided to go with the hot hand at center in each game. Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson hasn’t committed to either player longterm and continues to rotate late in games.
The Nets have gotten production from both players and can’t complain about that for now but must focus on finishing games with solid victories.
