Last Game

Maryland

Maryland had just as bad of a time at home against Penn State last week as Rutgers did at Michigan last week. The Terps were at the wrong end of a 59-0 score. Five and a half minutes into the game Maryland fell behind 14-0 and it went downhill from there. PSU not only beat up Maryland on the scoreboard, but they also outgained their hosts 421-68. It was a complete rout.

Rutgers

The Scarlet Knights can sympathize with Maryland plight last week. Rutgers traveled up to Ann Arbor and were thrashed 52-0 by the Wolverines. Nothing went right for RU on either side of the ball. Their offense gained 152 while the defense yielded 476, including 355 through the air. It was the final straw for head coach Chris Ash, who was fired the next day.

More from Empire Writes Back

It’s been a very eventful week for Rutgers football. As mentioned above Ash was fired early in the week. Offensive coordinator John McNulty also lost his job. Nunzio Campanile was promoted from assistant to interim head coach. Local fans will remember Campanile as the very successful former head coach at Bergen Catholic High School.

Not only was there a change at the top, but Rutgers is also making a change under center this week. Senior McLane Carter is still in concussion protocol and has been ruled out on Saturday.

His replacement, Artur Sitkowski was unimpressive in his two previous 2019 starts. It’s clear he hasn’t made much progress since last year and will now be redshirted, which means he’s done for this year. Up next is redshirt freshman transfer, Johnny Langan.

Before the season started, this was a game Rutgers saw as one they can win and break their Big Ten losing streak. Look for the Scarlet Knights to utilize the RPO with a more mobile quarterback. The combination of Langan, Blackshear, and Isaih Pachecho in Rutgers backfield should provide hard for the Terps to handle. On the other side of the ball, Maryland will find the Knights defense harder to score against than they think. Take the points, this one will be close.
