New York Mets: Six games from 2019 they wish they had back

May 29th, 2019 is a day that will live in New York Mets infamy. In the introduction o, the date was used as the start of their tailspin which took them from a .500 team to 11 games below. It was a game that showed how precarious their bullpen was. Eventually leading to one of the worst pitching meltdowns in team history. Those who watched it or even saw the highlights later bore witness to the total unraveling of the game’s best reliever from the prior season, Edwin Diaz. This loss demoralized the Mets and set them back for the next six weeks.
The game started off quite well for the Mets. Pete Alonso hit two-run homers in both the first and fifth innings to give New York a 5-3 lead through five. Hechavarria knocked in his second run of the game in the sixth then Rosario and Smith hit back-to-back home runs leading off the seventh to put the Amazins up 8-3.
Down by five in the seventh, Los Angeles managed to score a run on two hits off Mets relief pitcher Robert Gsellman. Afterward, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said had his team not scored a run in the frame, he would have taken some of his starters out of the game for additional rest since the team was already running away with their division. It’s the little things that kill, this time it was quicksand.
If you haven’t seen “The Replacements,” its a movie about replacement football players during a professional football league strike. In a team meeting where the players are asked about their fears, Keanu Reeves, as team quarterback Shane Falco, answers “quicksand,” then he elaborates.
"You’re playing and you think everything is going fine. Then one thing goes wrong. And then another. And another. You try to fight back, but the harder you fight, the deeper you sink. Until you can’t move… you can’t breathe… because you’re in over your head. Like quicksand. More from New York Mets Last Chance Caesars Promo: Claim $1,250 Bonus for ANY MLB Bet! Jeurys Familia was brought back in the offseason to be Diaz’ eighth inning set up man. Up to this point, he’d been absolutely horrible, so it was a bit of a surprise Callaway brought him in to pitch the bottom of the eighth. Corey Seager took the third pitch from Familia deep to close the gap to 8-5. Familia managed to finish the inning with no more damage.
Despite a hiccup here or there, Diaz had pitched well for the team over the opening two months. He entered in the ninth with the opportunity to earn his 14th save of the season. Joc Pederson led off with a home run. The next batter Max Muncy did the same.
The long balls were followed up by a pair of doubles that tied the game at nine. Seager was intentionally walked then Matt Beaty beat out an infield hit to load the bases. The last of which made six straight batters Diaz failed to retire. Alex Verdugo‘s sacrifice fly scored the winning run from third and nausea reigned supreme by all who follow New York Mets baseball.
If the Mets could have pulled out half of these games, they would have been tied with Milwaukee for the final playoff spot. If one of them was the May 4th game, it would have been the Mets squaring off on Tuesday against Washington.
