The New York Mets missed the 2019 playoffs by three games. Here are six games the Amazins lost that they would like to have back.

The New York Mets had a very up and down 2019 season. They were left for dead in June but fought back valiantly to get back int the playoff hunt. Fans were treated to relevant baseball in September for the first time in a few years. The Amazins weren’t eliminated from contention until the final week of play.

In the end, they missed the playoffs by three games. Three games! It’s a hard pill to swallow considering some of the circumstances surrounding the team. There were key injuries that left them shorthanded and forced Mickey Callaway to move players to defensive positions they weren’t comfortable with. The Mets had a miserable stretch of games between May 29 – July 12, when the team went 13-24, to fall 11 games under .500. Then there was the thing that drove their fans absolutely nuts all season, a horrible bullpen.

Going back over the schedule, there were many games the New York Mets lost that they could have won. They were actually better than most thought in one-run games, going 28-27. On the other hand, they blew 27 save opportunities.

Call it luck, bad bounces, or the will of the baseball gods, the Amazins suffered some very difficult defeats. Every team can go back over their season and pick out games they should have pulled out but didn’t. Most of them didn’t miss the postseason by three games (except Cleveland).

Here are a half-dozen games the New York Mets lost in 2019 that they want back.

Just Missed – Mets strike out 26 Braves in 2-1, 14 inning loss on August 23.

2nd Dishonorable Mention, June 23 – Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mets reliever Seth Lugo entered the game to face the heart of the Cubs batting order. He put two of the first three batters faced on base. The fourth batter Javier Baez went down 0-2 quickly, before the Chicago shortstop took a slider to right field, for a game-winning home run. Final score Chicago 5 – Mets 3.

1st Dishonorable Mention, May 16 – Mets starter Zach Wheeler didn’t have a good day giving up six earned runs in six innings. His team, however, rallied back. Down 7-4 in the ninth inning, they scored two runs leading up to Robinson Cano‘s infield hit that loaded the bases. Keon Broxton, who entered the game in the fifth inning as a replacement for injured Michael Conforto came to the plate. He struck out to end the game.
