New York Jets: 4 Keys to Defeating the Browns On Monday Night Football
Contain Odell Beckham Jr.
It’s harder to do than it sounds, due to his past success with New York’s NFC team. He’s been lethal at MetLife Stadium, catching 205 passes for 2971 yards and 23 touchdowns in his career. That includes six receptions, 149-yards, and a score in his only regular-season game against Gang Green, on December 6, 2015.
The Browns prized offseason acquisition had a relatively quiet seven receptions for 71 yards in his first game with Cleveland last Sunday. The Jets can’t get lulled into a false sense of security. OBJ is one of the few NFL players who can have a monster game on any given day. Additionally, he knows the quirks of MetLife Stadium very well.
Odell led the team in targets with 11 against the Titans, so it’s clear that Mayfield is trying to get the ball to his top receiver as much as possible. The Jets should look to double team the former NYG star with as safety, hopefully, Jamal Adams, over the top. Their plan should be to force Mayfield to find one of his other targets. Tennessee used a similar strategy to blanket OBJ and it led to one of Mayfield’s three interceptions in the game.
Final Thoughts
The Jets suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Bills last week, but they have a chance to get back on track against a Cleveland Browns team that has many more weaknesses than originally thought. Sam Darnold may be out, but the Jets are still a tough squad to beat. The team must execute their game plan and stay healthy. They have the talent to secure their first win of the 2019 season.
