1. Make the Playoffs

This is the loftiest goal for this young team and if they don’t make the playoffs, they’ll be a borderline team in my eyes. Looking at the landscape of the Eastern Conference, it is split into four tiers: The Elite Tier, The Middle of the Pack, the Borderliners, and the Lottery Teams. The Elite Tier is made up of the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, and the Boston Celtics.

The Middle of the Pack consists of the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat. After that, the Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets, and Detroit Pistons are all teams that are going to battle for that 6th, 7th and 8th seed. Beyond that point, none of the other conference teams that have made the improvements like the Knicks.

Charlotte is going to be in rough shape after losing Kemba Walker, Washington is going to have some talent but won’t go anywhere without John Wall. Additionally, the Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Bulls are a few years away. That leaves the Knicks as a potential nine seed to battle it out with those borderline teams Orlando, Brooklyn, and Detroit.

I certainly won’t advocate for the Knicks to be anything higher than the six or seven seed. In fact, they might not even mesh well enough to get out of their despair and end up at the bottom of the East again. All of this is entirely possible for the Knicks this year but on paper, they have one of the more talented rosters compared to the teams that will duke it out for the bottom seeds of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
