Kaapo Kakko (18), Right Wing

After a dismal 2018-19 season, the New York Rangers struck gold in the Draft Lottery, landing the second overall selection. They knew whoever New Jersey passed on with the top pick, they would be getting a “franchise” caliber player.

In 2010, there was a big draft debate among fans and pundits over who should be the number one overall draft pick, Taylor (Hall) or Tyler (Seguin). This year it was almost the same thing with Jack (Hughes), or Kaapo (Kakko). But at the start of the draft season that wasn’t the case, Jack Hughes was the overwhelming favorite.

Then Kappo Kakko had a breakout season for TPS in Finland, finishing third on his team and 34th in the league with 38 points on 22 goals, and 16 assists in only 45 games. That broke Aleksander Barkov‘s rookie goal scoring record, even though Kakko missed almost a quarter of the season.

Those would be great numbers for any prospect, what makes them eye-popping is that Kakko didn’t turn 18-years-old until February 2019. Scouts flocked to see him play in Finland, but he was also dynamic on the world stage. Kakko scored five points for the Finn’s gold medal-winning team at last year’s WJC. He also played on Finland’s gold medal World Cup team, garnering seven points in 10 games against some of the world’s best players.

What makes Kakko so great?

He is both fast and agile on his skates, weaving through defenders like a motorcycle in a traffic jam. At the same time, Kakko is a strong skater, it’s hard to knock him off the puck. Speed, agility, and strength make for a hard trifecta to beat.

When the speedy forward reaches the offensive zone, he shows incredible instincts. His vision and high hockey IQ allows him to see plays before they happen. Like Gretzky and Crosby, Kakko puts the puck where his teammate will be, not where is. A trait that’s rare in the game, especially from someone so young.

Last but not least, New York Rangers 2019 first-round pick can finish. Whether it’s on a quick snap shot while skating through the offensive zone, a slapper from the point, or getting into the scrum in front of the net for a rebound, he can put the puck in the goal. The Kaapo Kakko show will be playing on Broadway for a long time. Enjoy it.
