Before the New York Giants annual preseason clash against the Jets, we put out an article about what to watch for in Daniel Jones pro debut. Today we grade his performance.

Thursday night the New York Giants opened up the preseason 2019 with a 31-22 victory over their in-stadium rivals the New York Jets. Aside from the first game of the season, it marked the debuts of many new members of Big Blue, most notably this year’s sixth overall draft pick, quarterback Daniel Jones. In a pregame article, I wrote that wanted to see how the rookie performed in three areas. Today, I grade his performance against what I was looking for.

Jones recap

Daniel Jones took over the New York Giants quarterbacking duties on the team’s second possession of the game. Earlier Eli manning led the offense to a quick three and out against Gang Green’s number one defense in his only action of the night. The Jets had their second unit in when Jones entered the game, while the G-Men kept most of their starters in.

The rookie’s debut was limited to one series. It went eight plays as part of a 79-yard touchdown drive and 5:23 duration. He looked sharp against NYJ’s “B Team” defense, completing five-out-of-five for 67 yards, including a 12-yard TD pass to Bennie Fowler to cap off his night.  This is the play-by-play:

  1. Quick five-yard pass completion on the right side to Cody Lattimer.
  2. Wayne Gallman nine-yard gain on a run between right guard and tackle.
  3. Play action pass left to Golden Tate for 11 yards.
  4. 23-yard pass to cutting Lattimer on the left side.
  5. Gallman up the gut for six yards.
  6. Gallman tries to go over right guard and gets stuffed for a three-yard loss.
  7. 12-yard out pass to Fowler on the left.
  8. Touchdown pass to Fowler on left side corner route.

Here are his grades in several key areas as well as an overall grade.
