Pitchers

SP – Luis Severino has been the New York Yankees ace over the last two seasons. Since 2017, Severino is 33-14, with a 3.18 earned run average (ERA) and 1.09 WHIP. He was also an all-star both those seasons. Losing a pitcher of his quality would devastate most pitching staffs. While the Yankees rotation has been weakened without him, the team has been able to thrive due to the emergence of Domingo German (13-2).

Severino has missed the entire season with inflammation around the rotator cuff of his pitching shoulder. He seemed as if he was on the way back before suffering a setback in May. According to Boone yesterday, the ace is close to throwing off a mound. It’s uncertain whether or not he’ll be healthy enough to pitch for the Yankees the remainder of 2019.

More from New York Yankees

SP – CC Sabathia turned 39 last week. His cranky knee is acting up again. The future Hall-of-Famer is due for a cortisone shot in the next day or so to relieve inflammation. In the final season of a 19 year Major League career, Sabathia has thrown 90.1 innings and sports a 5-6 record with a 4.78 ERA.

SP – Jordan Montgomery may not be the pitcher Severino is, or ever be the legend Sabathia has become, but he’s a good pitcher. In 2017, he started 29 games, going 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA. He was off to a 2-0 start last season when he injured his elbow, leading to Tommy John surgery. It’s been over a year since the operation and he’s resumed throwing. Montgomery could be back before the end of this season.

RP – Dellin Betances has been a valuable setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman the past few seasons. His 2019 has roughly paralleled Severino’s. The 31-year-old has been out all year with a shoulder impingement. He also suffered a setback in May and the team has been very cautious with him ever since.

The reliever has been nothing short of outstanding since becoming a roster mainstay in 2014. Betances made four straight all-star games from 2014-17. In that time, he has pitched in 349 games posting a 2.22 ERA and 1.018 WHIP. Adam Ottivano has done very well replacing him, but the Yankees could really use their bullpen staple back on the active roster. Lastest estimates have him returning to action by the end of this month.

It’s been a tough season healthwise for the New York Yankees. Even iron men broadcasters John Sterling and Michael Kay have missed time in 2019. Think about the lineup Boone could have with just his injured players, let alone if they were currently playing on his first-place team.
