Much to the surprise of nobody, at this point, it seems as the New York Mets will once again be selling at the deadline. While financial gain is usually all the teams seek, here are ways they can potentially hijack the deadline.

The New York Mets might only be a handful of games out of a Wild Card spot in the standings, but don’t let that fool you. The Mets have one of the worst records in the NL and can’t quite seem to get out of their way.

Yes, I write this as they come off a series win against the Marlins in Miami to open the season’s unofficial second half, but they still have a long way to go to get into contention. Essentially, it is not going to happen for Mets fans this year.

As if it couldn’t get much worse, the Mets don’t have that many assets at their disposal, not even to sell. Sure there is Zack Wheeler, who will still get some bite after his injury, Jason Vargas who at least salvaged his career with a recent stretch of starts, and Todd Frazier, who is exactly who we think he is, but that is really where the list of assets gets thin.

The Mets will do something, however. In years past, we have seen them ship off players to save money. We have also recently seen the Mets trade players only to sign them back, like Jeurys Familia and Jay Bruce (sort of).

So, if the Mets want to truly change the course of their franchise, their long and short term future, they are going to have to get creative and pony up. I know that General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen thinking outside the box has backfired so far, but I digress.

The Mets have a legitimate chance to hijack the MLB trade deadline this season. After all, they convinced themselves they were going to be contenders and not sellers, so this whole thing is already off course. The Mets can hijack the deadline, shock the world in many ways.

Without further ado, here are some ways the Mets can hijack this year’s deadline and make it about them. Please note, some of this is me speculating scenarios that I believe make sense, I am not officially reporting anything.

Let’s start with something relatively obvious, but still unlikely to happen.
