New York Yankees: CC Sabathia deserves the retirement tour
As his career prepares for its final half of the season, CC Sabathia has plenty to be proud of and should be appreciated by more than just the New York Yankees.
CC Sabathia has earned the farewell tour many players of any sport would love to have at the end of their illustrious careers. The New York Yankees have been supportive in recognizing Sabathia’s tenure with the team that provided a World Series title in 2009 and leadership annually in the starting rotation.
Sabathia will be honored tonight at the All-Star game for his contributions to Major League Baseball as he plans on wrapping up his 19th and final season of his career. The irony of the honor is that it will take place in Cleveland where his career started for the Indians back in 2001. The left-hander has compiled a hall of fame worthy stat line of 251 wins and 3,057 strikeouts.
Sabathia spoke with reporters last week about receiving the honor expressing his appreciation for the All-Star invitation.
"“It is cool it is in Cleveland. I would have went regardless but the fact that it is there makes it easier for everybody to make that decision, It’s amazing. Major League Baseball usually doesn’t do things like this. To be the guy they are honoring feels good. This is awesome.’’"
Sabathia ranked third all-time in strikeouts among left-handed pitchers, and he’s often going to be remembered for coming up big in critical spots. As a member of the Milwaukee Brewers for a brief stint, he led the team to a playoff berth and pitched on short rest effectively to give the team their best chances at winning. He was 11-2 with an almost unhittable 1.65 ERA with seven complete games and three shutouts.
Sabathia would bring his talents to New York in 2009 and take over as the ace of the Yankees pitching staff. He would go on to win 59 games in his first three seasons in pinstripes dominating hitters during the incredible span. His role afterward began to diminish due to injuries, but he continued to be a reliable innings eater during the regular season and clutch in the playoffs.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred released a statement regarding his invitation to Sabathia for his career-long accomplishments.
"“We are delighted that CC and his family will join us in Cleveland, where his Major League career began, We look forward to celebrating his many accomplishments during our All-Star Game festivities.”"
Sabathia has been charitable throughout his career with his foundation continuing to be an ambassador for the game in the twilight of his career. It’s a well-deserved honor at the All-Star game that should continue in visiting ballparks throughout the summer.
