New York Mets: Forget all else, the Mets just are not a clutch team
More Examples
To keep the fun coming, the Mets have also lost to every team they have played this season at least once. Yes, they have few series sweeps, but those have all since been offset by further losses. The Mets have played a pair of two-game series and couldn’t even sweep one of them. They have played at least five other teams just three times. So far they do not “own” a single one of their opponents. All of them have found a way to beat the Amazins at least once, all of them. That is not clutch either.
The Mets also have a sub .500 record against good teams (winning percentage over .500), and it’s not close. They are 18-32 against those teams. That implies that they don’t really have any big wins or enough against teams they need to beat in order to move up in the standings.
Against lefties, New York is also, you guessed it, not clutch. The Mets are 8-11 against left-handed pitching this season. So, that is pretty easy for opposing managers to game plan around.
One positive
Thankfully, there is an exception to the rule this season. They have a winning record at home, Their walk-off wins all came at home, but all of them also came at night. It seems as if the New York Mets best case scenario is playing under the lights at CitiField. The team has over 10 wins when both those things applied so far this season.
Baseball is wild, but it seems like there is a very specific scenario in which the Mets have shown that they are at their best, at home and at night. As their overall record shows, that is not a large percentage of total games played so far this season.
