Spinning the tires in mud

If I were GM, I wouldn’t touch the Pete Alonso‘s, Michael Conforto‘s or Jeff McNeil‘s of this team, who are the rising nucleus. That leaves almost no one to trade, even if they wanted to go that route. Again, their bullpen has no one reliable except maybe Seth Lugo, who they obviously need.

There is almost literally no way for the Mets to get better outside of what they have now, which isn’t working out for them. Additionally, with the exception of maybe pitcher Anthony Kay, a significant call-up that has a long-term, future impact, doesn’t seem imminent.

The Mets still have a slim chance to make a run. A playoff berth seems unlikely, but at the rate, things have been going since their humble exit from the 2016 playoffs, team supporters would settle for them playing somewhat meaningful games beyond July.

From what has happened so far in 2019, they won’t even get that.

To throw this in, the Mets also lead the NL in fielding errors with 53. That means a lot too, but in theory, it makes sense. They need to sacrifice defense for better offense, that I understand. Also, great teams can overcome that, like the Atlanta and Chicago, who are also top five in the NL in errors.

So again, the Mets bullpen and lack of resources are their biggest problems. You can watch the games and see what the team is up against. But they won’t spend money to fix it, they can’t trade anybody to bolster it, and they aren’t facing easy lineups for a while to suppress it.

Next. Anthony Kay promotion to Syracuse is important timing. dark

The only thing worse than things going wrong is knowing there is no way to fix them. In classic Mets fashion, being a clown show right now is not nearly as daunting as the path to stop being a clown show. New season, the same story. It literally might never end.
