Once again, the New York Mets have fallen below their own, far fetched expectations. The problem is that the Mets are not playing the game of baseball well. Additionally, their path to improvement is incredibly daunting.

The New York Mets are coming off some rough outings where their taxed bullpen let the game get way too out of hand. I could have written this sentence after any game, you would be hard pressed to guess which one. Unfortunately, it is already the middle of June, and I have to write this sentence.

Typically by this part of the season, we have already seen the cream rise to the top. However, there are always those teams that linger around just long enough to make a push and be in the race when the season shifts into high gear, after the all-star break and right before the deadline.

For the New York Mets, they now, as I write this, sit 8.5 games out of the NL East lead, which is horrible. However, much to the chagrin of new General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen, some of us could have expected this, the whole NL East went all-in this offseason. This division was supposed to be competitive (the Marlins are always the exception).

Now, even the National League Wild Card is almost too far out of reach. They sit 4.5 games out of the Wild Card and four games out of an even mediocre .500 record. Adding fuel to the potential dumpster fire, there are four teams between NYM and the final playoff spot. The Mets have only been firing on all cylinders in spurts so far in 2019. They are where they are because the Amazins do not execute wholly, as a team.

If there is one silver lining to the season so far, even in spite of already being a series loss away from double-digit games back in the division, it is there is still plenty of baseball left to be played. It’s still only June 18th and the Mets, theoretically, still have time to be over .500 and remain only a handful of games out of the Wild Card by the All-Star break.
