Free agency is rapidly approaching, and now that the Brooklyn Nets have traded away their first round pick making room for a max contract, Fans should be confident.

The Brooklyn Nets made the playoffs for the first time since the 2014-15 season, this past year and it looks as if that may only be the start. Last week the Nets traded away Allen Crabbe and the 17th overall pick in this year’s draft and in return they received Taurean Prince.

The trade, however, was not at all about Taurean Prince. It was about dumping the $18.5 million contract that was taped to Crabbe and by getting rid of that contract, the Nets now have enough cap space to sign back D’Angelo Russell and a max contract. This means that the Nets will be able to bring back the guy who brought them to the playoffs for the first time in several years and they will also be able to give him a running-mate to make this an every year kind of thing.

The question, however, is whom that max contract will belong to? The answer to this question is very likely Kyrie Irving, who recently announced he would not be picking up his player option with the Celtics, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Irving went to high school in New Jersey, so that makes the Nets his hometown team seeing that when Irving was in high school, the Nets were still playing in New Jersey. Because of this reason among several others, many believe that Irving to the Nets is a done deal and to be completely honest with you, I think it is as well.

Irving would fit in great with the Nets as he would give them a one-two punch in the backcourt and then a reliable center in Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt, plus a rising star in Spencer Dinwiddie coming off the bench. This is a team that could seriously win some games, and if the Raptors lose Kawhi Leonard to free agency, the Nets could be a serious contender in the East.

Another thing that makes Irving to the Nets look even more likely is his recent firing of longtime agent, Jeff Wechsler. Why this matters you ask? By firing his agent, it is believed that Irving will now sign with Roc Nation Sports, an agency firm founded by none other than Jay-Z.

For those that don’t know, Jay-Z is also a big Nets fan and is from Brooklyn, which is yet another sign that points to Irving signing with the Nets. With everything pointing towards Irving calling the Barclays Center home for the next several years, I think it’s time for Nets fans to get excited.
