The New York Yankees missed out on one of the most prominent free agent pitchers of the offseason, but they could potentially get someone even better.

The New York Yankees missed out on former Cy Young award winner, Dallas Keuchel who was a free agent this offseason, but it could be a blessing in disguise. The Yankees have suffered quite a bit this season on the injury front, and unfortunately, that won’t be changing for the foreseeable future.

The Yankees won’t have a fully healthy starting pitching rotation for at LEAST another month. With everyone on the starting rotation hitting the injured list at least once this season, the Yankees need another pitcher or two to help out.

There is a chance that the starting pitcher the Yankees go after, could be Nationals superstar, Max Scherzer. Scherzer is one of the best pitchers in the MLB and seeing the Nationals are below .500 and they are currently the second to the worst team in the NL East, they will likely be huge sellers at the deadline.

One of the players they give up could very likely be Scherzer who is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, a six-time All-Star, he has thrown two no-hitters, is tied for the MLB record of strikeouts in a single game and is one of the most feared pitchers in the MLB.

Adding Scherzer to the Yankees would make the Bronx Bombers one of the most feared teams in the league if they aren’t already. Here is what the Yankees rotation could look like when fully healthy if they were to add Scherzer:

The problem is, there are six players in this rotation. The question then becomes, what do the Yankees do? Do they trade one of their current starters? Do they drop one of them back to the bullpen? What do they do?

In my opinion, moving one of these pitchers to the bullpen or going with a six-man rotation is likely the best bet. The reason for this is because come next season C.C. Sabathia will no longer be around as he is retiring following this season.

If the Yankees were to trade someone like say, Domingo German, who is having an incredible season, they would be in a hole next season as they would go from potentially six starters this season, to four next.

Another question is what happens when the postseason rolls around and the Yankees likely move to a four-man rotation? There are a lot of things to consider for the acquisition of Max Scherzer to become a reality for the Yankees. The next question is, what would the Yankees have to give up to acquire Scherzer?

If the Nationals are getting rid of stars such as Scherzer, they will undoubtedly want young talent rather than proven players. With this, we could potentially see the Yankees get rid of prospects such as Clarke Schmidt, Deivi Garcia, or Trevor Stephan. These three are each a pitcher in the top ten of the Yankees top prospects, but with the Yankees current pitching situation, none of these three will see the MLB with the Yankees for quite some time.

For one, there are two pitching prospects ahead of them with the Yankees, and also the Yankees have most of there pitchers around for a couple of years. So with that, getting rid of either of these three would not be a massive loss at all for the Yankees.

Next. Not enough at-bats available for Bombers bats. dark

Getting Max Scherzer in pinstripes is something Yankees fans should surely keep their eye on as there is a chance one of the best pitchers in baseball could end up in the Bronx.
