Hold: Jason Vargas is good

What Jason Vargas is doing right now is truly one of the most incredible things I have seen in baseball in a long time. It is for sure one of the most unexpected things I have seen from a Mets player in my many years of covering this team. For a guy who once led the AL in wins, he must have a great mix of skill and luck.

More importantly, how he is doing this year is directly reflecting the Mets still being in the division race based on the standings.

Vargas has been bringing it as the season is heating up. In his most recent start, he threw a complete game shutout, albeit, against the sub-par San Francisco Giants. It’s still an impressive feat in this day-in age nonetheless.

But that start is not an outlier, it adds to a trend.

That above tweet says it all.

Vargas is on a roll and it dates back to right now and a short stint on the IL that led to Wilmer Font starting games, like I said, it’s been a whirlwind for the Mets this season, but I digress.

For as great as Vargas has been this season, he still hasn’t done enough to prove this will last. We all know how pitching goes in this league. For every 10 stars you do great, you could have 10 that go horribly wrong. It comes in waves. While Vargas has had some impressive feats throughout his career, (look up his complete game numbers) he is still the same pitcher who we all wanted demoted earlier this season and most of last season where he nearly had a 6.00 ERA.

While I am encouraged as to what Vargas has been doing and what he has meant to the Mets this season, I would suggest holding onto the hype for just a little bit longer. We are a few more starts like this away from being able to buy into it, but let’s see a little more.
