New York Yankees: Forget Dallas Keuchel, here’s what needs to happen
Trade works for both teams
This is a trade that benefits both teams in terms of money and overall team improvement. With the Yankees and Nationals dealing their most expensive players in Stanton and Scherzer, the two contracts would basically offset each other until 2022 when Scherzer becomes a free agent.
After that, the Nats would absorb an extra $160M over the next six seasons and they could have some trouble affording that alone. With the money that the Yankees have, they would have to eat some dollars, but it would be worth it for both teams in the end.
In terms of on the field benefit, if young star Juan Soto can move to center, with Frazier in left and Stanton in right, Washington could have an All-Star outfield. In addition, the loss of Bryce Harper to Philadelphia has greatly damaged the Nationals lineup. It would be huge for them to offset that hole with a slugger like Stanton.
At the worst, they can trade for Stanton now and then move him to a contender at the trade deadline. There is a precedent for a team acquiring a superstar and quickly flipping him. It’s what the Marlins did with Mike Piazza in 1996. He was traded to Florida on May 14th for several all-star caliber players. Eight days later, the Marlins sent him to New York for a package of prospects.
This deal would help the Yankees out in more ways than one. The team would be able to bolster this starting rotation. Additionally, they would be able to keep the guys that have been so important in leading them in their current charge for the top spot in the division.
Keuchel is a decent option to have, but if the New York Yankees are looking for a World Series this year (which I hope they would be), then it would be in their best interest to go after a trade for Scherzer instead of being cute and signing Dallas Keuchel just for the sake of having another left-handed Starting Pitcher.
