New York Mets fans had high hopes for Pete Alonso at the start of the season. It is safe to say he has delivered so far. Now, he needs to be rewarded.

When it comes to writing New York Mets articles for me, they tend to be more negative than anything else. I guess it just comes naturally after writing about them for over a year now. Now here comes the praise of someone who joined the Amazins at the perfect time and is now giving Mets fans hope, the Polar Bear himself, Pete Alonso.

At the beginning of the season, there was some question as to whether or not Alonso would even be called up in time for Opening Day. Some thought would he spend a few weeks in Syracuse to get some playing time in before stepping into the big leagues.

General manager Brodie Van Wagenen told everyone that the best 25 players would head north to Queens after spring training ended. Alonso was one of the 25. He became the New York Mets starter at first base, beating out Dominic Smith, and now it’s time to see his name on the All-Star roster this summer.

It did not take long for Alonso to get going. In the first series of the 2019 season, against the Washington Nationals, he went 6 for 12 with three doubles, three runs batted in and two walks. That was the beginning, he tore up Major League pitching in the month of April.

The young slugger continued his Rookie of the Month campaign as he hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning against the Miami Marlins in the following series. At the end of April, he finished with 25 hits, nine of those being home runs, 23 runs batted in and a batting average of .266.

As of Wednesday night, Alonso sits with pretty outstanding stats. May isn’t over yet but the budding star has 19 home runs, 43 runs batted in and a .264 batting average. If he keeps going at this pace, he will demolish the previous rookie home run record, which is held by Daryl Strawberry who hit 26 dingers in 1983.

Alongside record breaking stats, Pete Alonso shows a certain type of drive that makes him worthy of an All-Star appearance. His competitive spirit has helped the Mets in ballgames on more than one occasion. Alonso’s status to play against the St Louis Cardinals after getting hit in the hand was up in the air.

Pete begged his way into Mickey Callaway‘s lineup, and his request was granted. His reasoning was because he wanted to face his old college foe and current Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson who he despised and had no luck against while playing in college. As a reward for his manager’s confidence to leave him in the Mets lineup, he crushed a home run, 444-feet to put his own demons to rest.

Alonso has the raw power to silence his critics, which became a reality after San Diego Padres pitcher Chris Paddock felt like he was robbed of Rookie of the Month by Alonso. Although Paddock did keep Alonso hitless with a pair of strikeouts, it was not the last we would see of the Polar Bear. The next game, he hit a 449-foot bomb to put the Mets ahead in the ninth inning which silenced Paddock in the dugout as number 20 rounded the bases.

55 games into 2019 the rookie has shown he is already a huge asset for this New York Mets team. Without Alonso as the regular first basemen, it is hard to imagine what the Mets season would look like. He is doing things Mets fans have not seen from a rookie in a long time.

Alonso has greatly impacted this Mets team, he deserves your vote to be part of the National League All-Star team in Cleveland on July 9.
