The team chose to trade back into the end of the draft’s first round to acquire the top cornerback on their board, Deandre Baker. Additionally, they picked up Julian Love on day three.

Defense playmakers were what the Giants wanted and then selected in the draft. After taking quarterback Daniel Jones (6th overall) and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (17th overall), the New York Giants traded back into the first round to land Georgia Bulldogs corner Deandre Baker. The former All-American is expected to start week one, and his presence could open up the playbook for Bettcher.

If Baker can hold coverage on his side, Bettcher can rush linebackers and safeties to give the Giants’ defense even more option to send at opposing offenses.  Baker has covered some great receivers in college and was very stingy on giving up touchdowns.

"“The thing I would say about Baker is that he played in a very, very tough league,” Bettcher said. “We all know how long it was before he gave up a touchdown pass. He competed and covered some of the best players that have come out of that league on offense. His tape speaks for itself. One of the best, if not the best, tackling corner in the draft, period. Excited to have him. He did an outstanding job at camp this past week.”"

The team also chose to draft Notre Dame cornerback Julian Love. This was an absolute steal in the fourth round for the G-Men. Love broke Notre Dame’s record for career passes broken up and was one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award given to the best defensive back in the country.

It’s a good thing the Giants were able to get Love in round four. Many mock drafts had the Golden Domer going in the third. Big Blue used their third rounder in last year’s supplemental draft for Beal. With the recent additions, it’s unclear if the former Western Michigan standout has fully recovered from his shoulder injury.
