Bringing Keuchel to the Bronx

The 31-year old lefty will be a much-needed boost to a starting rotation filled with question marks. Heyman said Keuchel has been throwing simulated games every five days or so to keep in a routine. Of course, there is nothing like facing live hitters in a game that counts, but what he’s doing now is a great basis for those minor league tune-up starts once he joins a new team.

Keuchel’s agent Scott Boros was on SiriusXM Radio’s MLB Network channel on Monday. He said many teams have come to scout Keuchel for the lefty’s simulated games. Various reports say the New York Yankees have been one of the more regular attendees.

Among the other interested teams are Atlanta and St. Louis who are both in contention for a National League Wild Card slot. Additionally, the Minnesota Twins, who own the best record in the Majors this year and a 10 game lead in the AL Central would like like to add his pitching prowess to their offensive juggernaut of a team.

Contrary to his earlier stance, Keuchel seems willing to take a one year contract now. Why anyone would want to go through this morass again next year is a different question. A single season deal makes him a prime rental target that a team won’t have to part with good young talent to acquire.

As for money, ESPN’s Buster Olney tweeted that he still wants the big bucks but has come down on his per year asking price. Somewhere around $18M (pro-rated) for this season should get Keuchel’s signature on a contract. Money is one thing the New York Yankees have in abundance.
