Spencer Dinwiddie Might Not Be As Wrong As You Think.
By Joey Holeman
Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie raised some eyebrows when he tweeted the even if the Knicks sign KD and Kyrie, he is still on a better team.
Earlier this week, Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie, responded to a tweet where a fan posed the question: if the Knicks land superstar free agents Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, which New York basketball team is better? Dinwiddie responded with the confidence you’d like your star player to exhibit:
Dinwiddie got a lot of heat for this statement and in most instances simply mocked for what he wrote. But can you blame him for feeling this way?
Think about the difference between the Knicks and Nets this season.
- The Brooklyn Nets are the city’s first basketball team to make the playoffs in four years.
- The Nets had New York’s first winning season in five years.
- The Nets finished this season with 25 more wins than the Knicks.
- The Nets beat the Knicks three out of four games this year.
- The Knicks finished with a 17-65 record, which was last in the entire NBA.
Dinwiddie might not be as wrong as many people thought. This is all hypothetical but let’s put it in perspective. Durant and Irving are both highly touted free agent superstars, but they both have questions lingering around them.

Irving is coming off another individually impressive year, but the Boston Celtics lack of playoff success has invited many to question Irving’s leadership ability.
This postseason, Durant has been playing on a superstar level, but the calf injury that has kept him out of the last five playoff games could possibly linger into next season. Durant’s history of lower body injuries is worrisome for a Knicks team that will hypothetically rely heavily on Durant to win games. If Durant misses any significant amount of time, the Knicks season would be in jeopardy.
The Brooklyn Nets also have some things that are hard to find in the NBA – continuity, and trust. Once those qualities are found, they are key to sustaining success in this league. Look at the four conference finals teams – Portland Trailblazers, Golden State Warriors, Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee Bucks – they all have a core of players that have been playing together for years. They are comfortable playing together as a team. This current Nets core has built similar trust and familiarity, which will keep them successful in the NBA.
The Knicks current roster does not have enough proven complimentary players to help KD and Kyrie sustain success. The Knicks would have to surround their two superstars with a mix of youth, which they have, and proven veterans, which they do not.
In this hypothetical, the Knicks would have the better star players, but I think there is a strong argument to be made for the Nets having the better team.
